 The Positive and Negative Impact of Social Media on Students

Students are more connected than ever before through social media, especially during these difficult times, when they are physically distanced from their family, friends, and peers. While social media provides many benefits, such as giving students the chance to express themselves creatively, learning opportunities, and the chance to connect with others, social media can also have a negative impact on students, both physically and mentally. It is easy to become addicted, and research shows that students who spend too much time on social media can suffer from poor sleep, eye fatigue, negative body image, depression, anxiety, cyberbullying, and more. 

The positive impact of social media on students

• Provides every student with the possibility of learning online.

Why spend money on travel and renting an office if you can study from the comfort of your home? These days, the wish to study and access to the Internet is sufficient for getting a top-notch quality education. Distance learning is an effective method for getting a decree from any educational establishment, regardless of its location.

 

• Makes easy to get instant access to reliable information. 

Instead of going to the library, it is possible to save time and find the necessary information using Google. Moreover, Internet resources are very helpful when the information isn’t available in the library. It is possible to find sample papers online as well as useful guidelines on how to do complete assignments the right way.

• Serves as an effective device for academic performance.

Social media platforms can be successfully used for teamwork. For example, if you are assigned to conduct research on a certain topic together with a group, it is easier to meet online and discuss the assignment together.

• It helps to improve writing skills. 

Many students lack the necessary skills for writing essays and other academic papers. The most effective way to solve this problem is to start a blog. Freewriting helps students to practice regularly, free from the worry that their thoughts will be strictly evaluated.

The negative impact of social media on students 

1. Social Media Reduced Focus of Students in Learning

Social media mostly reduced the focus on the learning of the students.

Mostly the students are busy using social media for time-wasting and didn’t focus on their targets and achievement in learning.

Students get addicted to social media, they always want to use social media all long day. They get distracted from their study and learning and future achievements.

They always want to use social media for chatting and sharing pictures and videos etc. and didn’t focus on their study and learning.

As students always want motivation and concentration on their studies but social media distracted them from study and learning.

Social media breaks their motivation and concentration in their study.

2. Usage of Social Media Causes Low Grades

Yes, social media has a lot of benefits for the students in the study. But also, social media affect their study in some cases.

Mostly the students cannot even imagine a day without posting on social media or chatting with friends by using social media platforms.

Research shows that the students spend 12 hours maximum on using social media.

Social media affects a lot their academic performance. Mostly the students who’ve used social media every time get lower marks.

From my experience and research, social media drop the grades and other academic performance of the students.

The students prioritize the use of social media and want to use social media every time even in school during lectures.

Students didn’t pay attention to the class lectures and by this, they miss a lot of important information for their study and learning.

3. Social Media Waste Time of the Students

Social media is the most time waster for students nowadays. They go online to Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

They use social media to upload their pictures and videos and share them with other friends and relatives daily for no reason.

When you go around the students even in their study time, they use their mobile phones and seeing posts on social media.

There are a few reasons by which I think social media is the most timewaster for the students.

Social media mostly affects the school life of students.

Social media lead the students to dangers.

It affects the grades of the students.

It can affect the student’s relations with the teachers.

The most important thing for students is their study and future achievements. But by using social media platforms they get distracted from their goals and study.

They only used social media for time-wasting.

4. By Using Social Media Students Reduces Command Over Language

In using social media platforms, the students used the shortest form words mostly.

They get addicted to the language they used in social media. it’s called slang words or the shortened form of words.

This affects the student’s ability to effective writing.

They forget the spelling of the words used in the language; they used slang words instead of actual words spellings.

5. Fake News Spread on Social Media

Social media is one of the biggest platforms which spreading fake news. Nowadays mostly the students are connected to different social media platforms.

They see the posts on social media which can be fake and the students forward it to the other students without confirmation that the news is real or fake.

This can lead the students into danger. It is also one of the reasons social media is bad for students.
